Shoebox Scans
General[edit]
- Final format for scanned images will be 300dpi @ the size of the original print, numbered in sequential order, and color corrected for best final image before put onto a CD or DVD
- This should be considered to be the economical solution for scanning volume archives of photographs.
- Although the resolutions of the Shoebox Scans lend themselves to be able to be reprinted, the quality will not be the same as a Flatbed Scan
- Special requests can be made by request(Duplicate CD's/DVD's, orders broken up onto multiple CD/DVD's, alternative naming or numbering, order broken up into sub-folders, color correction requests). *** Shoebox Scanning rates include up to 5 custom-labeled folders on the disk per job. Add $5/each for additional customized folders. ***
Requirements[edit]
- Print Scans only
- We can scan originals from wallet size (2.5" x 3.5") to 8 1/2" x 11"
- NO sticky or tacky residue (scotch tape, double sided tape, and tacky tape will catch in the Shoebox Scanner, and cause the print to not be scanned, and slow down the process)
- No cardboard frames or backing, (anything as thick or thicker then a Polaroid will NOT pass through the Shoebox Scanner)
- Prints should be organized and facing ONE direction, double sided scanning is possible, but customer will be charged for the TOTAL number of images.
- Images can be separated into folders on a CD/DVD per customer request, but the images must be pre-sorted into groups when they bring them in, and should have groups labeled.
Process[edit]
1- Turn on Shoebox Scanner (ON switch on back-bottom-middle of Shoebox Scanner)
2- Open "Scan Validation Tool"
3- Select "TWAIN" driver, click OK
4- Click "Save" icon (floppy disk), and select the location you want to save files too
5- Click "Play" icon to start scanning
6- Insert prints one at a time (multiple prints can be inserted if caution is used, (see below)
7- Open folder and check scanned files for streaking, artifacts, and general scan quality
8- Use Adobe Bridge program to re-name/re-number images (see: Adobe Bridge)
9- For CD's - Transfer files to Color Station using the Frontline Ticket Creator, using the "$t" code
NOTE: For DVD's or CD's with separate sub folders - Transfer files or sub folders individually to Color Station using the Frontline Ticket Creator, using the "$S" code, to have the images sent to PICOUT after "step 10". Then follow steps for creating a manual CD/DVD (see: Making a Custom CD or DVD). Sending a folder with sub folders through to Color Station will cause the sub folder hierarchy to break and all the images will be put in one folder.
10- Rotate and color correct images to the best of your ability, use ACC (Auto Color Correct) to save time. When all images are finished, click the green check mark to send the images files through.
11- CD will be printed with customer name and total # of scans, a 4" x 4" Matte index should get printed with this code as well
Extras[edit]
Setup - Preferences and Settings can be changed for the Shoebox scanner, by clicking the "Setup" icon in the "Scan Validation Utility". Here you can change things like DPI, which side of the image is being scanned, and the type compression the file receives(.jpg or .tiff)
Scanning "batches" - Prints can be stacked into small "batches" and stacked on the Shoebox Scanner, and the scanner will grab the prints from the bottom of the stack and scan them. Caution must be taken, as the prints can shift and skew when being stacked and scanned, and will produce "warped" images. This usually occurs when stacking "glossy" images, as there is less friction, "matte" prints will have more success in stacking and scanning.
Checking images for errors - When scanning, you should stop occasionally (maybe every 50 images) and check the scanned image files for quality, and streaking. Though previews of the images appear in the "Scan Validation Tool" but may not show things like dust streaks, or artifacts. Things like dust streaks and artifacts will continue from scan to scan, and will not stop unless the Shoebox scanner is opened and manually cleaned.
Support[edit]
Service is no longer available through Kodak. They've discontinued these scanners as well as the service for them. Luckily there's someone we can send the scanner to periodically for cleaning only. Unfortunately he does not service the scanner mechanism and parts are no longer available.
